We're doing the Whole30 - AGAIN!

The
AGAIN!
After both successfully completing our own Whole30s, we did a little off-roading. At first it was just little things we allowed in, but slowly our old way of life started creeping in. As I mentioned in a post last week, I could feel a difference in my body. I had lost my Whole30 glow. So after Thanksgiving, we decided to start another Whole30 between now and Christmas. And then another Whole30 between Christmas and our anniversary in late January. Why you may ask?

1.) I want increased energy, better sleep, and that awesome feeling I had before to come back!

2.) I still have weight to lose - especially since a little bit came back :(

3.) We are going to try to go to Puerto Rico to celebrate our anniversary!!! This is Operation Beach Bod!
Excited about doing another Whole30!
We originally planned to go to Italy, but we just didn't save as much as we thought we would have saved by now. Life happens! But I'm really hoping we can make a small trip to PR happen. I have lots of family that would take care of us - if need be! Of course, we still want to save enough to spend a few nights alone in San Juan! ;)

I don't think I'm going to post daily about my Whole30 progress as I did before - I just don't have that kind of time. But I will most likely post pictures of my meals on Facebook - so if you don't already follow me there, you may want to consider it! I will, though, do a weekly recap, since Saturday mornings are my new dedicated blog times.

So here's to another 30 days of eating whole, real foods! For those that are not familiar with the Whole30 program, please click here for more information or take a look at my signs that are taped to our fridge!

Keeping it simple today.

Only three days left in week one!

Fitness Challenge - ZWOW #33

As I mentioned in a post last week, along with my friend Tina, we are hosting a 4 week fitness challenge to complete Zuzana Light's ZWOW (workout of the week) every day for that particular week.

THIS CHALLENGE STARTS TODAY!

Zuzana Light posts a new workout every Thursday, but when Tina woke up this morning to do her workout, it wasn't yet posted! So she started with last week's workout - ZWOW # 33 - Sexy Spy Workout!

SO LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, complete your workout and post your results to the comments below. POST EVERY DAY after you complete your workout and compare to your previous results. I'm sure we are all going to get better, stronger, and faster!

I'm going to complete this tonight, since I drove earlier today from Boston. IT WILL GET DONE and I will post my results in the comments as well.

GOOD LUCK!!!

4 Weeks of ZWOW - Fitness Challenge!

After yesterday's post on the Zuzana Light workout, my friend Tina suggested that we host a 4 week FITNESS CHALLENGE using Zuzana's Workout of the Week (ZWOW)!

Since I just finished a 30 day challenge in August, another challenge is exactly what I need to stay motivated! Who else wants in?

Here are the details:
  • Zuzana Light posts a new ZWOW every Thursday on her YouTube Channel
  • Starting on Thursday, September 13th, I will post the link to the video on this blog for everyone to easily find it
  • The challenge will be to do the ZWOW (for that particular week) everyday for 4 weeks!
  • The workouts only take 10-20 minutes, require little to no equipment and can be done anywhere!
  • If you'd like to join the challenge, leave a comment below or on the Consider the Leaf Turned Facebook Page
  • Every day that you complete the workout, leave a new comment with your results (how you're feeling, time it took to complete, how many reps you were able to do, etc)
This is a perfect opportunity to squeeze in a quick, but highly effective workout into our ever busy lives and watch our fitness improve in just 30 days. And no matter where we are all located, we can support one another!

Who's with us?

My Whole30 - Recap & Final Results!

The

I couldn't be happier that I stumbled upon the paleo/clean eating lifestyle in June of this year, and even happier that I found the Whole30 program. If you know me personally or have been following my blog over the last couple of years, you know that I've been on this weight-loss journey for a while. I've tried many things - some with success, some with failure.

In 2011, I lost 25 lbs by following the Weight Watchers program. I felt great and was so proud of myself. But then, I couldn't lose anymore. I kept gaining and re-losing the same 2-5 pounds. I couldn't keep on target. I would stay "On Point" for 5-6 days and then have a "cheat meal." That cheat meal would negate all of the hardwork I had done that week and I would be back at point A. It was an endless cycle and I couldn't break it.

After my wedding in January 2012, I gained back 8 lbs. I felt awful - but I knew where it came from. We let loose - we enjoyed whatever we wanted - and the pounds crept back up very quickly. I started tracking points again but I still couldn't get anywhere!

In June of this year, I stumbled upon a post on Facebook talking about the paleo lifestyle and I was intrigued. I did a lot of research and just started slowly incorporating some of the basic concepts. Read this post about when I started to have a paradigm shift.

Once I started to cut out processed foods and grains, I started to feel better! And I started to lose weight again. It was exciting. I started to read new blogs and find new recipes using only fresh and natural ingredients. But I still struggled with relapse. After eating a carb-loaded cheat meal, I would feel awful. Sluggish. I would develop a migraine. After 3 specific incidents, I knew I had to commit to eating clean for good.

One night I found the Whole30 program and I was intrigued.  I quickly downloaded their book It Starts With Food, and the mind-blowing process began. I learned so much about how our body works and how important it is to feed it what it is designed to thrive on. Not just survive - THRIVE. On July 31st, I committed to starting the official Whole30 on August 1st - with many people around the world. I was excited, worried, anxious, nervous, not completely confident I could do it.

BUT I DID IT, PEOPLE.
30 FULL DAYS OF CLEAN EATING.
NO CHEATS, NO SLIP UPS.
JUST REAL, GOOD FOOD.

At first it was challenging, as you can read through my daily recaps, but as time went on it got easier and easier. I formed new habits. And now, this is the norm. This is just the way I eat now.

So after that lengthy intro, here are the results I experienced while on my Whole30:
  • I have more energy
  • I sleep like a baby (but I NEED my 8 hours)
  • My skin has cleared up
  • My clothes fit way better - I'm actually down a size!
  • I have a better relationship with food - I don't feel the need to overindulge. I'm fuller faster and don't feel the need to have seconds. I don't have to count points, measure servings, or count calories. It's LIBERATING. Just fill my plate with real food. It's SO SIMPLE. AND NO GUILT.  If I am still hungry - I eat!
  • My food taste better - I don't know how to describe it, but fruit taste sweeter now and vegetables taste so good and my food just taste so awesome lately. And it's not just that I'm a great cook. I have some recipes that are 100% compliant from prior to this change - and they just taste better now. I think since I'm no longer eating artificially enhanced foods, I can now appreciate true flavor.
  • I've experienced new foods - I LOVE cauliflower and Brussels sprouts now -- who knew?
  • I feel empowered/committed/proud of myself/just generally awesome
  • I don't feel deprived of anything - I actually finally feel in control for the first time ever!
  • I have more confidence
  • I lost weight!
From July 31 through August 31st - I have lost 6.6 pounds!
 SIX POINT SIX!

I can FEEL the difference and I think you can see it too:

I have some additional pictures (just in a sports bra) where you can really tell the difference in my stomach. I'm a modest woman so those are only for me to enjoy! But I feel smaller in my waist and I think my face is a little slimmer. But most importantly - I just FEEL GOOD. It's kind of hard to describe.

Other Awesome Stats:

BODY FAT % - DECREASED BY 2.6%
WATER % - INCREASED BY 1%
MUSCLE MASS - INCREASED BY .6
BMI - DECREASED BY 1.3

Comparing to my journey over the years:

Again, this has been an extremely positive and eye-opening experience. And it just makes so much sense to me that I don't know why I would stray away or try something new. Now that the Whole30 challenge is over, I have a couple of options. I can either start reintroducing questionable foods back into my diet or keep doing Whole30 until something really delicious and really worth it comes along. Since I don't really miss anything and I want to continue to push myself towards optimal health, I'm just going to continue to do what I'm doing and allow a treat when I find myself in front of something so special and so worth it.

Until then, I'm going to keep on keeping on!

PS: My hubby is going to start his very own Whole30 journey on Monday! I'll keep you posted on his progress! :)

PPS: If you want to try this out for yourself, please let me know! I would love to offer any guidance, support, or just help you clean out your pantry! ;)

XOXO,
SMP

Ready. Set. Go! Challenge - Week 1

Happy July!

Can't believe how fast this year is going!

As I mentioned last week, I am participating in an at-work fitness challenge. Here is how I stacked up against my goals for week one:

Steps goal: 70,000
Actual: 54,546

Exercise minutes goal: 150
Actual: 215! Go me!

Weight loss goal: 1 pound
Actual: lost 2.6 pounds!!!!

I'm considering this a successful week!

Here's to an even better one!

It's been a while!

It's been a busy couple of weeks and I haven't had the time to sit down and update everyone on my ever-so-interesting life ;) !

I just downloaded the blogger app on my phone to see if maybe it is easier to do quick blog posts on the go. Especially since Mark's MacBook died and he has taken over mine! (because reading video game strategy guides and YouTube videos are SOOO much more important!)

Anyway, over the last two weeks I did gain 1.2 lbs, but I'm not that concerned. I traveled two weeks in a row for work and tried my best to maintain my healthy lifestyle. Usually I gain a lot more during my travel weeks so I'm actually surprised it was only about a pound. After getting back to PA on Sunday night, I've been really good with my food choices and I've been getting my exercise in! As of this morning, I lost 1.4 lbs, so I know I'm on the right track!

On Monday, at work, we also started a company wide fitness challenge over the next 12 weeks. (It's called "Ready. Set. Go!") We created teams and are competing in three categories: steps taken, exercise minutes, and percentage of weight loss. My job even sent me a fancy pedometer!

My personal goals for this challenge are to take 70,000 steps per week, 150 exercise minutes per week, and lose 1 lb per week. There are some cool prizes for the team that wins in each category so I'm pretty excited! A little competition is healthy! I will be updating my weight loss tracker page to reflect the new weight loss goals (1 lb per week, 12 pounds loss by 9/16) and will be posting weekly on my progress!

And for those that are interested in what I've been eating lately:

I bought like 3 pounds of sweet potatoes the other day for less than $2 so I've been getting creative with them. This was absolutely delicious - I'm calling it sweet potato salad? I diced and roasted sweet potato, zucchini, and cauliflower. Then I made a slightly spicy roasted red pepper dressing and mixed in some fresh cilantro. It was amazing. Sweet + Spicy = WIN!

This was a one egg scramble with left over baked sweet potato fries. Quite good and filling!
what we like to call the paleo style burger: lean, grass fed beef burger, guacamole, salsa, 1 slice of bacon, in between two large slices of romaine. It's messy, but fun to eat and you DO NOT miss the bun!
steak salad with mangoes and avocado
post workout dinner: 1/2 sweet potato (good, clean carbs), steamed broccoli (veggies), guacamole (good fat), and lean steak on a bed of greens (protein). Oh and by the way, if you've never tried sweet potato seasoned with salt, pepper and  rosemary, you definitely should. Like RIGHT NOW. Go.
Crispy Kale Chips and country style boneless beef ribs

1/2 sweet potato, 3 oz of sliced turkey, and 1 egg plain omelet
Another steak salad with a side of cauliflower that I made on the grill (wrapped in tinfoil)
More salad! This time with yummy grilled chicken.
2 eggs scrambled, 1 slice of bacon, 1 watermelon wedge and some berries. Very satisfying breakfast!
